Markets do not crash at convenient times. When Nifty fell 38% in March 2020, decisions had to be made in days, not weeks. The investors who acted were not smarter — they had already done the research months earlier and knew exactly which stocks to buy and at what price.
A watchlist is your pre-decided shopping list. It separates the work of researching a business from the work of buying it. You research in calm times, you buy in panic times.
This article gives you a 30-50 stock watchlist framework — what to track, where to find ideas, how to tier them, and free Indian tools that make this 30 minutes a month, not 30 hours.
The 3-Tier Watchlist Structure
A flat list of 40 stocks is hard to act on. A tiered structure tells you what to do at every price point.
Tier
Count
Type
Action Trigger
Tier 1 — Core
10-15
Large-cap quality compounders
Buy whenever PE is at 5-year low
Tier 2 — Opportunistic
15-20
Quality mid-caps + cyclicals near bottom
Buy at target price with margin of safety
Tier 3 — Speculative
5-10
Small-cap growth, special situations
Small allocation only when thesis triggers
Tier 1 Examples (Indian Quality Compounders)
HDFC Bank, TCS, Infosys, Asian Paints, HUL, Nestle India, Bajaj Finance, Pidilite, Titan, ITC, Reliance, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, Maruti Suzuki, L&T.
Tier 2 Examples (Quality Mid-caps)
Polycab India, Astral Pipes, Dixon Technologies, Bata India, AU Small Finance, CDSL, Tube Investments, KEI Industries, Cholamandalam Finance.
Tier 3 Examples (Higher Risk)
Recent listings still proving themselves, micro-caps with high growth, or turnaround stories. Limit to 5-10% of overall portfolio because mortality rate is high.
Where to Find Watchlist Candidates
Six reliable sources for Indian investors. Use a combination — do not depend on any one.
1. Mutual Fund Holdings (Free)
Top schemes from Parag Parikh, Quant, Nippon, HDFC, Mirae, ICICI all disclose holdings quarterly. Sites like moneycontrol.com and valueresearchonline.com aggregate these. When 5-7 unrelated quality funds all hold the same mid-cap, take notice.
2. Bulk and Block Deals (Free)
NSE and BSE publish daily disclosures of large trades (≥0.5% of equity). FIIs and DIIs buying repeatedly in same stock is signal. Available at nseindia.com → Reports → Bulk/Block Deals.
3. Index Additions
Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50, Nifty Midcap 150 rebalance twice a year. Recent additions get passive fund flows and analyst coverage — often outperform for 12-18 months post-inclusion.
4. Shareholder Letters & Newsletters
HDFC AMC, Mirae Asset, Marcellus, Buoyant Capital, White Oak publish quarterly letters with theme and stock discussion. These are PMs explaining their thinking — gold.
5. Earnings Surprises
Companies that beat consensus estimates by 20%+ for 4 consecutive quarters deserve attention. Track via Trendlyne, Moneycontrol earnings tab, or Screener.in.
6. Industry Trade Publications
Chemicals: ICC newsletters. Cement: CMA reports. Auto: SIAM monthly. Pharma: IPC. These reveal industry leaders before stock-screening tools do.
The 10-Column Tracking Sheet
Set up a Google Sheet with these 10 columns for each stock. 30 minutes per stock to populate, 5 minutes per month to update.

Highlight Column 3 (Current Price) green when within 10% of Column 8 (Target Buy). This turns your sheet into an automatic alert system — open it once a month and see which stocks are in your buy zone.
Review Cadence — Three Rhythms
Monthly (30 minutes)
Refresh prices, PE, dividend yield
Check which stocks are within 10% of target buy
Note any major news or management changes
Quarterly (2-3 hours)
Read quarterly results for Tier 1 (top 15) — concall transcripts on screener.in or AceEquity
Update profit and sales growth columns
Promote/demote stocks between tiers if business has fundamentally changed
Remove stocks where thesis is broken (compliance issue, market share loss, fraud red flag)
Annually (4-5 hours)
Read full annual reports for Tier 1 stocks
Recompute intrinsic values and refresh target buy prices
Rotate out 10-20% of watchlist replaced by new ideas
Review past 12 months — which stocks did you act on, which did you miss, why?
Free Indian Tools That Work
Screener.in — free for 10 watchlist alerts; ₹1,500/year for unlimited + custom queries. Best for fundamentals.
A watchlist solves three problems most investors face. (1) Decision paralysis when markets crash — you know exactly which stocks to buy because you researched them in calmer times; (2) Avoiding bad-timing buys — instead of buying any stock that catches attention, you only buy from a pre-researched list when the price hits your target; (3) Time efficiency — fundamental research takes 4-6 hours per stock; you cannot research from scratch when an opportunity comes. A watchlist of 30-50 quality stocks researched over months means you act in minutes when opportunities arrive.
30-50 stocks is the sweet spot for retail Indian investors. Less than 20 means too few options when opportunities arise. More than 75-100 becomes hard to track meaningfully — you cannot read all quarterly results for 100 companies. Structure: 10-15 large-cap blue-chips, 15-20 quality mid-caps, 5-10 emerging small-caps, 5-10 sector specialists. This gives diversification across market cap, sector, and growth stage.
Six reliable sources: (1) Mutual fund quarterly disclosures from Parag Parikh, Quant, Nippon, HDFC; (2) Bulk and block deals on NSE/BSE — repeated FII/DII buying is a strong signal; (3) Nifty 50, Nifty Next 50, Nifty Midcap 150 index additions; (4) Shareholder letters of HDFC AMC, Mirae, Marcellus; (5) Companies beating estimates by 20%+ for 4+ quarters; (6) Industry trade publications (chemicals, cement, auto, pharma).
10 data points per stock in a Google Sheet or Notion table. Identity (name, ticker, sector, market cap), valuation (price, PE, P/B, EV/EBITDA, dividend yield), quality (ROCE 3-yr avg, debt/equity, sales CAGR 5-yr, profit CAGR 5-yr), triggers (target buy price, thesis in 2 sentences, biggest risk in 1 sentence). Update valuation columns monthly, quality columns annually after results, thesis whenever business fundamentally changes.
Three review cadences. Monthly (30 min): refresh prices, PE, dividend yield; check if any stock is now within 10% of target buy. Quarterly (2-3 hours): read quarterly results for top 15 holdings; update growth columns; promote/demote between tiers. Annual (4-5 hours): full re-read of annual reports; recompute intrinsic values; refresh targets; rotate out 10-20%. Most investors do monthly + quarterly well but skip the annual deep dive — that is where wealth is built or destroyed.
